What do you do when it’s a Saturday afternoon, a typhoon is just passing by and a four-day long weekend has just started? You go to Linux Day[1] at the National Computer Center! Many thanks to all the speakers, students and volunteers who braved the weather and congested traffic just to attend. You guys rock!
So what went down at Linux Day 2011? Here’s a quick rundown of what transpired.
Engels Antonio (Fedora Project) opened the technical sessions with a talk about systemd[2]. Ryan Ching of IT Group talked about RHEL, virtualization and Red Hat[3]. Prof. Ariel Betan talked about the history of Linux in the Philippines and IOSN ASEAN+3[4]. Bani Lara talked about how PREGINET[5] utilizes Linux to cut costs while delivering services for the Philippine Research, Education and Government Information Network. Chivas Sicam talked about DevTree[6] – a project that provides quality computer education programs for schools in the preparatory, grade school and high school levels in the Asia-Pacific region. Paul Magahis talked about Proxmox VE[7] and his experience setting it up for a local telco. For the encore, Engels did a talk on a personal project called kalasag[8] – an Open Source port scan detection and response tool for Unix and Unix-like operating systems based on Psionic Portsentry.
Fedora contributors who were in attendance include Magie Antonio, Arnold Laurinaria, Kim Murga, Engels Antonio and myself. Lei Bautista of Red Hat was also on hand for the event and would’ve sung an intermission number if a guitar was around. Yep, we also distributed the media sent by Harish to everyone with a lot still left for Software Freedom Day next month. Pictures of everything to be posted by Arnold soon.
